Peter and Sharon Cream from Beyond Water joined us from Kenya to tell us about how they are helping people in Africa with clean water and sanitation. Peter and Sharon, who are originally from New Zealand, but now live in Kenya, started Beyond Water in 2007. Beyond Water helps people in Kenya, Uganda and several other African countries, and Rotary clubs help fund their projects. Through Beyond Water, 240,000 people have been helped and now have clean water. Beyond Water works to help schools, remote communities, and medical clinics. Peter and Sharon showed us slides of their work. They use local communities and local materials to construct their water projects. They also have set up health education days after the facilities are built to teach about hand washing and basic sanitation. Where they have added toilets, schools have better attendance and grades go up. Working with a medical clinic that helps the Masai people that was without running water for years, Beyond Water was able to get them running water, which allowed the clinic to build an indoor toilet and ward to keep people overnight. Beyond Water also has leadership and mentorship program for girls in Africa. When asked about their funding, Peter Sharon says it comes from Rotary clubs, schools who raise funds, individuals and community groups. 100 percent of the funds go to their projects and they don’t start a project until the funding is in place.
