President Karen and Scholarship Recipient Owen Shafer.
Owen Shafer, one of our scholarship recipients from 2024, spoke to us about his first year of college at UT-Austin. He first focused on the extra-curricular activities that he was involved in, including attending many UT football games, participating in intramural soccer and basketball, being asked to join the Texas Wranglers (the men's basketball team cheering and service organization), joining Phi Gamma Nu, a professional co-ed business fraternity, and joining the UT wealth management group. These various activities and organizations allowed Owen to make new friends outside of the Anderson HS contingent that was attending UT. Owen was able to participate in service activities and through the wealth management group and Phi Gamma Nu, make connections, attend conferences, and make site visits. During his sophomore year, Owen will remain involved in all of these groups, including acting as director for external affairs for the wealth management group and taking on an investment team role and acting as a recruitment leader for the Texas Wranglers. Owen also told us about some of the classes that he took over the last two semesters and how he was able to maintain a 4.0 grade point average. We look forward to hearing more from Owen as he makes his way towards graduating from UT-Austin.
