On March 7th, Past-President Tink Hill told us stories about African-Americans in the American West. He told us of Nat Love - "Deadwood Dick" who wrote a book embellishing stories about himself and Bass Reeves who became a lawman after he was freed. He was the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi and captured over 3000 bad guys over 32 years. Ben Hodges' was a contemporary of Wyatt Earp in Dodge City - 1/2 Hispanic and 1/2 African-American, and somewhat of a trouble-maker. Among the many settlers of the west, there were 500 African-American cowboys, and towns in Kansas and Oklahoma were settled by African-American families. Tink told us these and many other stories that are part of the rich history of the United States.
