Tink Hill was introduced by his wife Wing and then entertained us with another story from his past. He set the stage for his story by sharing a short video “trailer” for the groundbreaking TV series “I Spy,” the first TV show featuring a black in a leading role. At the time of its first showing episode in 1965, Tink was a sophomore at Austin High. Although experiencing some harassment from both students and faculty, Tink found his niche in drama and eventually settled in with a small circle of friends which included black boys and white girls. Apparently he and his group enjoyed many parties in West Austin homes simply because he and the other blacks were not allowed in the usual places teens hang out. One of the unique experiences he described in detail concerned one of the group’s members running away from home. The boys outwitted all the adults, sheltered her for a few days and eventually helped the girl reach San Francisco. She passed through Austin two years later, looked up her old gang, and then left and no one has heard from her since. They never knew why she left her home, what she did in San Francisco, and what happened to her since.
