On June 3 at our Zoom meeting, Jim Comer shared tips for making presentations in person and on Zoom. His top tips are as follows:
1) Sharing individuality leads to likeability, and likeability leads to connection with audience
2) A good presentation is not an “information dump”. No one can remember 8 or 10 points.
3) Don’t use voluminous number of slides with lots of bullet points.
4) Try to create a positive feeling between you and your audience.
5) Focus on one to three points. You want your audience to remember one or two of key points.
6) Know what two points you want your audience to remember and use stories and a good slides to get them across and remembered.
7) Jargon is your enemy!! Industry terms and acronyms shouldn’t be used with a general audience unless defined.
8) Talk to a “smart 9th grader.” If they can understand your content, anyone can get it.
9) Bring the person that your friends and family hear speaking - bring the real you - the way you really talk when you’re comfortable. Talk like you do when you talk about something you’re interested and passionate about. Don’t be a careful speaker. Be real!!
10) Throw in stuff that happening in the world or in your life at the time.
11) Tie key points to stories!
