Dawn Lewis, School Connections Manager from Austin Partners in Education was our speaker. Dawn told us about Austin Partners in Education is connecting the community to the classroom with mentoring and tutoring programs that help improve student college and career readiness.  Dawn gave us statistics about AISD students -51.3% at risk 53.4% economically disadvantaged 55% Hispanic 30% white, 81,000 students, with Asians the fastest growing demographic. APE has the following programs:
  • math classroom coaching middle school
  • Mentoring
  • College readiness advocates
  • Gear Up tutors
After showing a video about mentoring, Dawn described mentors as caring thoughtful and non-judgmental adults who can commit to once a week throughout school year and are good listeners.  Mentors support and encourage and build self esteem by sharing stories and experiences.  Being a mentor is a very rewarding experience.
