Victor Tovar spoke to us about SAFE Alliance. SafePlace and Austin Children’s Shelter merged about 5 years ago to create SAFE Alliance, which has a shelter and counseling services along with over 30 other programs to support survivors of child abuse, domestic abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking. Victor showed us their website -- Safeaustin.org and webpages describing the different services such parenting and life skills; a lot of educational programs. The website has a 24-hour phone line to call, a number to text and a chat function – all available to people who do not feel safe. They are focused on helping Austinites but have been contacted from all over the world. 2100 people reached out to SAFE last September, which is the highest number in any month in the 45 years SAFE has been in existence. Victor attributed the increase to more in-person engagement starting in September – able to reach out to get help that is needed. The SAFE web site shows ways to give and volunteer and includes testimonials of volunteers. Victor also showed us how donations help. For example – $100/month provides for one night in the shelter. Services are free for victims of abuse. SAFE recently received a grant that allows for pets to kept at the shelter. There are many different volunteer opportunities including grant writing. Bridget Lester gave a testimonial about why she supports to SAFE – they work to keep families together. SAFE is currently hiring in all areas; ones needed to most work with children and in direct services such as nurses and youth care workers and other advocates.
