Last week, NxNE Austin Rotary Aziz Saleh told the story of his life and his journey from Iran to the U.S. Aziz was born in 1949 and had 18 siblings and half-siblings. He grew up in a small town in Iran and went to university to study chemical engineering. He decided to come to the U.S. for further study with the intent to return and earn more money in Iran. He first went to Norman, Oklahoma to school but then ended up in Austin at the University of Texas in the Fall of 1975 and started studying petroleum engineering. In 1978, he went back to Iran to work for a company there, but then the revolution happened. He was able to get back to the US around the time the Iranians took over the US embassy and started the hostage crisis. He told us about meeting his wife Mitra and how they worked to both get jobs in the U.S. He had problems with his visa but was eventually able to get that fixed. He left the oil and gas industry and went to real estate, which is where he met Rotarian Frank Ivy. Frank introduced Aziz to Rotary, and he became a life long Rotarian. Everything he does for Rotary comes from the heart!! In response to questions, Aziz discussed the politics of the regime takeover and how the terribly they treat the people of Iran, killing lots of innocent people. What an inspirational talk by our fellow Rotarian!
