Attorney John Hays was our speaker on February 8th and gave us "An Energy Overview: Where it comes from, Where it goes, and Why it matters." He began by explaining how energy works and how it allows humans to multiple their power and work output. He showed how energy evolved over time with humans first only producing what they could with their own effort to now when we have all kinds of modern conveniences powered by energy. He showed us that oil and gas are not just used for power but also used to create plastics, clothes, toys and many other items used in our every day lives. 95% of transportation fuels come from oil and gas, and 70% of energy comes from oil and gas. John showed us tables that set out energy produced by source and consumed by source. He also showed us power generation in February 2021 in Texas and how it led to the black outs and an almost collapse of the grid. Wind power dropped off and then gas production decreased because gas compressors lost electric power. He said we need back up generation if we are going to use wind and solar for power generation. John showed us many other charts and table showing producers of CO2, energy subsidies, oil and gas regions in Texas and the U.S., and how increases and energy and income go together. Despite many different predictions of how energy will evolve in the future, John pointed out that the world is more complex than it may appear and thus there is radical uncertainty in these predictions. He showed how predictions from decades ago have not proven true. This was a very interesting and information talk!
