Kara Schultz, Principal of Ridgetop Elementary School, introduced us to the current programs at her school, most notable of which is their dual-language offering. Every student is enrolled in the program and there is a waiting list to attend Ridgetop. Kara then discussed the issue of AISD school closings. Although there are numerous factors involved, decisions to close a school depend largely on program issues, the building size and condition, declining population in the area the school serves, and its academic achievement. Ridgetop’s most recent rating is B+, missing an A rating by only one point. Even so, Ridgetop was on the first list of school closures but not on the second. The parents and surrounding community worked hard at gathering data and statistics to support their school and succeeded in saving it. Obvious results of a closure would be 1) the fate of not just the teachers, but of all current employees, 2) moral of students, family, and surrounding community, and 3) quality of teachers remaining and the number of students per class room.
