Rotarian Tracey Ippolite works with CareTech to provide care to patients in the Austin area. She brought as our speaker, Ty Simpson, who told us about CareTech’s mobile wound care for chronic long-term open wounds. It restores long term mobility and quality of life via a stem cell patch that promote cells to grow and creates healing of the wound. This treatment is about 5 years old and uses donated stem cells from amniotic fluid and post birth placentas to create the patches. These undifferentiated stem cells join the patient’s cells to create more of them. Each patch is made to order for a patient, and they usually see progress within 1 to 3 weeks. Medicare will cover cost of the treatment if the wounds meet the necessary requirements since use of the patches to heal wounds leads to less cost down-the-line. Once a patient enrolls, they usually get a patch within 24 to 48 hours and then are visited weekly for treatments. Ty told us about a number of patients that were bedridden, but with this treatment of their wounds, they regained mobility and were able to get out of bed.
