Our speaker from The Arc of the Capital Area was Leah Marsden, who is the Administrative Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator. Leah has been with the The Arc for a year and absolutely loves it. She enjoys watching students reach their fullest potential. She enjoys chatting with the students and getting to know them on a deeper level. The Arc of the Capital Area is part of National nonprofit for children the intellectual/developmental disabilities. There are 120 different diagnoses for someone who has I/DD, so at The Arc, they get to know each individual client, not the disorder. The Arc has an art program for adults, who can sell their art for a commission, but the program helps them with communication skills and socialization. They also have a dog therapy program, a job support program, a guardianship program to help parents navigate when their children turn 18 , but cannot take care of themselves on their own. The Arc has adult education programs including life skills, resume building, interview practice, and health and wellness activities and education. Most clients are adults, although they do have younger clients as well. The goal is to help the students to be independent as possible. Leah discussed the many volunteer opportunities and showed us a video of the students at The Arc.
