Rotarian Denis Cowhig spoke to us about Maternal and Child Health, which was Rotary them for the month of April. Denis gave us statistics regarding maternal mortality. 810 women die every day from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. 94% of those deaths occur in lo and lower middle-income countries. 5.9 million children under age of five die each year from malnutrition, inadequate health care, or poor sanitation, all of which are preventable. Rotarians are addressing these problems through various Rotary projects supported by grants from the Rotary Foundation, such as the following. Rotarians in California set up telemedicine project in Nigeria. Rotarians in Japan and Brazil used a global grant to provide hospital equipment. Ukrainian Rotarians send children to camp in Poland for help with war trauma. Denis also showed a video about work being done in Haiti regarding maternal health that was supported by the Rotary Foundation – Midwifes for Haiti. The Polio Plus program also helps vaccinate other diseases that cause childhood deaths – diphtheria, measles and whooping cough. Polio Plus also provides vitamins as well.
