Kent Herring spoke to us about Family Eldercare, which is a 40-year-old not-for-profit organization with 100 employees. They help families take care of the caregivers of those families’ seniors. One of their first program was a guardianship program; they are the guardian of last resort used by the courts for adults with disabilities who need a guardian to take care of them. Family Eldercare becomes the guardian if there no family members to do so; they have 400 wards in Central Texas. Family Eldercare’s mission is to provide services to clients and family members in least restrictive setting possible and keep people in their homes. 90% of their clients are low income – less than $1100/month. Kent told us how 1500 people over age of 65 are living on streets of Austin. They are trying to help get these people into housing. In 2004, they built Lions’ Garden (54 units) to help house these people (who are under the Federal poverty limit) – live there for 30% of their income. They are continuing to focus on building additional housing and are involved in hotel conversion project with the City of Austin in Williamson County – it has 78 units and will be on-line at end of 2022. Family Eldercare believes in housing first – then help with other issues! Another housing project has 7 partners; 6 different building projects to equal about 1000 units along the I-35 corridor. The private sector is providing the land. Rent will be around $300/months for studio units. Their goal is to end homelessness for older adults. They also help veterans and people on Social Security manage their money and get their benefits and help people maintain their current housing. Family Eldercare also provide counseling for homebound clients. They serve 10,000 people every year. For more information go to www.familyeldercare.org.
