Harrison Eppright, our speaker September 14, told us about some of the lesser known treasures of Austin. The George Washington Carver Museum was founded in 1980. It was the 1st African American museum in Texas. It was a branch of the Austin public library before it became a museum. The museum now includes a live theater and a genealogy center. The Umlauf Sculpture Garden is another gem located near Zilker Park. The Cathedral of Junk off of South Congress south of Ben White has scrap made into art. The UT Harry Ransom Center has 45 million items in its collection - a lot of collections of authors, producers, directors, artists; has one of the few original Guttenberg Bibles. Mr. Eppright also told us that there 22 million visitors to Austin in 2014 and gave us a brief history of the Driskill Hotel. As a employee of the Austin Visitors Center he sometimes gets unusual questions, such as how to get back to Knoxville, Tennessee from Austin.
