Rotarian Lee Buckland, CEO of Play for All Abilities in Round Rock was our speaker on October 2nd. The park is a public park that is currently 140,000 sq feet and contains special equipment for everyone regardless of ability, including pods to develop different skills. There have been four million visitors since it was built in 2012. with 1,000 visitors a day. Lee told has how the park came to be built with the idea to build a park with play equipment for children with different needs instead of trying to help individual parents fulfill those needs themselves. A foundation was created to raise funds for the park. After starting at 50,000 square feet in 2012, it was expanded to its current size in 2017. Lee told us that the key point in building the park and keeping it growing was the collaboration between public entities, parents, medical professionals among others. Adaption is one of their core values; if a need is not being met with the existing equipment, they try to find a way to meet that need. He invited us all to visit the park and see how it benefits the kids. As part of the most recent Round Rock public bond election, funds are being allocated to replace some of the park’s equipment. Their long-term vision is a $20-$30 million project to expand 270,000 sq feet, including adding in elements for older kids. In closing, Lee showed as video about the park.
