Dan Leal spoke to us about Seedling, a mentoring program for children who have parent who has been incarcerated. These kids struggle in school, and Seedling provides mentors for them one day a week for 30-45 minutes. Seedling had 50 mentors its first year in AISD. The program has now expanded to include Del Valle ISD, Hays CISD, Pflugerville ISD and KIPP charter schools. The program served 652 children last year, and has 700 children with mentors in 2019-20. The mentors make a difference -- helping kids improve attendance and discipline issues at school and making them more resilient. Seedling is now also providing scholarships- $5000 in 8th grade that is held in trust until graduate high school. Dan and Mike Metschan both told us stories about their mentoring experiences in the program. Seedling is funded by grants, personal gifts and corporations, and 13 full time staff with a million dollar budget.
