Dr. Larry Wallace, Jr., a combat veteran, professor, author, former mayor of Manor, and currently Founder and CEO of Black Men’s Health Clinic (BMHC) showed a video, a slide presentation and conducted a most helpful Q&A period. He was accompanied by two colleagues, Madeleine and Cameron, who are responsible for various forms of outreach. The non-profit 501c3 was first organized in 2021 to meet the needs of the most vulnerable of the vulnerable, hence the name. It now serves a targeted population of under paid, under represented and under served, most of whom are persons of color, but now includes clients of all ages, all colors, all needs. The focus of the organization is assessment, coordination, and navigation. It actually treats clients only rarely, but instead partners with existing organizations already providing what is needed by the client. When BMHC funds are used it is to fill in gaps of service rather than to duplicate services already available. Major effort is expended to identify barriers to service that their clients experience and then to remove those barriers. All are welcomed without cost or requirement for insurance. The client is then interviewed and referred to the appropriate source for help and support, complete documentation and history in hand so they do not have to repeat their “story” over and over again. The services to which a client might be referred range from a haircut, food, housing, physical health care, dental health care, mental health care, social health care, suicide prevention, transportation, moving, employment, etc. BMHC has relationships with universities and medical facilities to provide internships for students in health care, social work, etc. This is a most unique organization in that it coordinates, facilitates, and supports in every conceivable manner a needy population, while also enabling existing organizations to serve their purpose more efficiently.
