Kent Miller from the NW Austin Rotary club told us about their global grant to provide water wells in Uganda. It’s called “WASH and Water Wells to Gain Health.” With their partner club, the Rotary Club oh Muyenga, Uganda, the plan is to install 13 water facilities. They are working with PaCT and Water to Thrive to make this project happen. Kent explained how there is a water crisis in world -- 1 out of 10 people on the planet lack clean water. In Uganda, 81 percent lack access to clean water. Often their only sources of water are on the surface, contaminated, and far away. Children and women are main water carriers, which leads to inadequate education, poverty, illness, and death. Kent showed the club where the water facilities will be placed. They will benefit 13 communities, 12,000 people and 2681 households. The total budget is $107,059. As part of the project, they will train community leaders in financial management, hygiene and sanitation, and as community household members. The local communities need to show a commitment to the project, which includes collection funds. Kent’s slides showed pictures of what the water facilities will entail.
