Rehema – Past and Present
Nancy showed us pictures of the Rehama school from 2011 and from today after the new building was constructed with assistance from Rotary. The school is located in a slum in Kenya. The school educates Pre-K to 8th grade children. There are usually 300 to 500 children. The new building has a generator, new kitchen equipment, better classrooms and sleeping areas, and new toilets and showers on each floor of the five-story building. There is a new library that serves 13 schools and 17 orphanages and the community. With the new library and school there has been a 50% increase on national exam scores in two years. They now have two students to 1 text instead of 5 to 1. The children are eager to learn and thankful for their resources. Every year, they have an anniversary party for the kids with cake – each student gets a little piece. There is also an essay contest for $2000 scholarships to go to high school. The school teaches skills like sewing, knitting, crocheting, and making bracelets to the children. Volunteers have also taught them games like Uno and how to play musical instruments like the recorder and drums. The Director and his wife send their thanks and blessings for all the donations.
