The program was a classification talk by new member Nancy Middlebrook, the result of a remarkable turn of events that started with an Austin High School reunion. Member Tink agreed to attend the reunion if Nancy would attend a Rotary meeting with him. The rest, as they say, is history. Nancy discovered Rotary to be a vital organization with a grand mission, not a club for “stodgy old men,” that the Rotarian is a great magazine, and that she is still learning about our mission, areas of service, and the 4-Way Test. Declaring herself a perpetual student, Nancy has earned a handful of degrees: bachelors in both secondary education and nursing, masters in geography, and a doctorate in cartography education. She also declared herself a bibliophile and would earn a degree in library science should the opportunity arise. Her work experience has been mainly in the areas of middle school nurse and hospice nurse, but her passion is geography and cartography. She also volunteers with Meals on Wheels. Her presentation ended with a Q&A period and her observations that 1)we have the right to make wrong decisions, 2)failure and suffering are not good or bad, they just are, a part of life, and 3)Rotary beautifully exemplifies working with others. Finally, I must apologize to Nancy if I have misrepresented or omitted significant points she made. Her presentation was so richly filled with fascinating information that I just could not both listen and take notes fast enough. Signed, Shirley
