Rob Faubion, chief community engagement officer for AGE of Central Texas, spoke to us about their programs.  The mission of AGE of Central Texas is to "older adults and their caregivers thrive as they navigate the realities and opportunities of aging and caregiving."  Rob will tell us more about what AGE does to fulfill that mission. AGE was started 40 years ago.  It created the first senior center in Hyde Park in an unused building owned the City of Austin.  They then created programs that filled in gaps in services that other nonprofits did not fill.  Rob noted that growth in central Texas in the aging population is exploding and is expected to continue creating the need for their services and the need for services for caregivers. There is also a large population of solo agers, who do not have family members nearby to provide assistance.  AGE has six specific programs that Rob discussed: (1) their Thrive Social & Wellness Centers that provide “vibrant daytime care for older adults living with dementia, memory loss or physical changes due to aging.”  (2) an Information & Resource Center that provide resources and support for caregivers and older adults. (3) a Health Equipment Lending Program; (4) a Memory Connections program that is a “comprehensive online support program for older adults experiencing mild or early-stage cognitive changes.” This program includes Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, which is “designed to actively stimulate the brain in a positive social environment.” (5) Caregiver U that provides caregiver courses as well as courses on how to prevent falls. (6) AGE Computer Lap that provides technology instruction.  This program now helps seniors learn how to use smart phones, tablets, and laptops.  It also gives them guidance on how to avoid scams.  The goal of AGE is to have everyone age in place successfully and with dignity!  They can use volunteers in a number of areas so please visit them on-line at ageofcentraltx.org.
