Kendall Henry, the Events Manager for Austin Sunshine Camps, was our speaker on the 24th of June. Austin Sunshine Camps have been around for almost a century. They were started in 1928 to provide the magic of overnight camp without the barrier of the expense.  The camps serve 8-15 year olds and are kids from families that would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend an overnight camp.  Austin Sunshine Camps hosts 500 kids over the Summer, with 8-11 year olds attending camp at the Zilker Park Lodge (80 kids a session) and the 12-15 year old campers attending a camp located on Lake Travis near Marble Falls (50 kids a session).  16-17 years old can come back as counselors in training at future camps and those 18 and older can come back as seasonal staff.  The camps prioritize returning campers for each year’s sessions.  The camps have different tracks/clubs that the campers can follow during their sessions. They also have ropes crosses and a zip line at the Lake Travis camp location.  Austin Sunshine Camps focus on camper wellness and work to transform their campers’ lives.  Starting in 2027, they will have a Spring break and Winter break camp as well as the Summer camp sessions. Most of their campers come from Williamson, Travis and Hays Counties.  Austin Sunshine Camps has 13 full time employees and 80 season employees.  Camp tours are available to see the impact of their mission.  They also have a camp supply drive that accepts donations.
