Tink Hill pinch hit as our speaker and told us about his first combat experience in Vietnam. He joined Marines in June 1965 as a 17 year old and until he was 18 was stationed in the U.S. Then he was sent to Vietnam. Tink told us about his arrival in Vietnam and his impressions of the other troops. Then he told us about his first patrol duty. They were out on the perimeter, but the platoon that Tink was leading was not excited about moving farther forward. Since it was so hot and humid, they took a break. Suddenly, tracers were flying over their heads. It ended up being friendly fire. The troops back at the camp saw them moving and thought they were the enemy because they were in a different spot than expected. One of the soldiers with Tink was able to get the firing to stop and they made in back safely. It was unclear where the incompetency lay in the matter.
