Dawn Lewis gave us a TerraClear Foundation update. She brought us a demonstration filter to show us was it is provided to Laotians through the TerraCare project. They still have to walk to collect water, but the filters provided them with a way to have clean water in their homes. Dawn showed us a video of the facility in Laos that manufacturers the filters from clay and rice husks. They are then sold, but the Foundations subsidies providing them to families that cannot afford to buy them at their full cost. As part of providing the filters, the families/schools who receive them are also taught basic hygiene and sanitation. 12,000 families have received these filters through the TerraCare project. They provided 180 filters per month in 2025. Because the recipients were setting up the filters wherever they could, the project now includes a rattan stand built by local villagers. The total cost is $75 per filter, training and stand, but the families who are helped only have to pay $5. The TerraKids program provides one water filter per classroom and also teaches lessons about hygiene. Dawn expressed her appreciation for our support for her Christmas card project that raises funds for the Foundation and would love to have our support again this year. She has joined a local Rotary club and is presenting to several Rotary clubs on her way to visit her son in New York State. She is thrilled to be part of Rotary and continues to fundraise for TerraClear Foundation since 20 percent of Laotians cannot afford the water filters.
