Our July 28th speaker was Fatima Berry. She told us brief stories which are reflected in her book “ My Early Life” . She was born in a taxi as her family was moving from Senegal to Guinea. When Fatima was two, her mother and baby died in childbirth. Her father soon remarried and Fatima had a difficult time with her new stepmother. She was soon sent to a family in the capital city; where she had to do all of the work from 5 a.m. until 10 or 11 at night. At the early ages of 12 and 14 she had two times when her relatives tried to arrange marriages for her. Even when she finally was able to come to America, a marriage was arranged with a friend of the family that she had never met; but he did not want to move to America and she did not want to move to where he lived in Spain so the marriage was dissolved.  Her stories continued and many people asked questions.
