Ed Grune is a Field Director with the Capitol Area Council – Scouting America. Ed manages staff members serving various communities: Sacred Springs District (Hays County), Live Oak District (Caldwell, Gonzales, Levaca, and DeWitt Counties), as well as the Waterloo District which serves specifically Title 1 Schools' afterschool programs across the entire council service area (which is basically the same as the weather map on TV). This program has 10 part time staff members that currently serve 14 schools in AISD, HAYS CISD, DVISD, and Manor ISD. This semester he is also personally running the Cub Scout pack program at Ortega Elementary on Tuesdays, Creedmoor Elementary on Wednesdays, and Perez Elementary on Thursdays. Ed told us about how the after-school program works. They meet once after school and there is also a summer semester program in some school districts. Most of the kids who participate are 2nd through 4th graders. To show us how the program works, Ed took us through the Bobcat Adventure, one of the sessions for the children. They learn the Scout motto, Scout law and Scout oath and he had us do the same. They also learn about leadership and each other. Ed mentioned other modules that the children are taught including personal safety, patriotism, family reverence, camping and outdoors. As part of the presentation, he took us through one of the fun games they play to learn about each other. Scouting, what a great program for our youth!
