Highlighting one of NxNE Rotary’s service projects that faithful members quietly carry out week after week, Sam Fullilove, Volunteer Coordinator with Meals on Wheels and More, brought us up to date on all the programs the organization offers in addition to the meal delivery program. The list is most impressive! PALS (Pets Assisting the Lives of Seniors): Pet care support and food delivery Mike’s Place: Day respite care for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s HOPE (Healthy Options for the Elderly): Delivery of prepackaged staple items to supplement the daily hot meal delivery Handy Wheels: minor repairs, corrections for safety to homes of clients Groceries to Go: personal grocery shopping Congregate Prep Help: On-site hot meal and craft activity for small groups Meals on 2 Wheels: new program to be launched in May, allowing cyclists to deliver meals. A 2-wheels, 2-benefits program! Food for client and Fitness for cyclist, a win-win for certain! Problems currently addressed by Meals is the gradual gentrification of Austin inner city, forcing clients to move, and then the subsequent expansion of the service area needing to be covered. Handout sheets summarizing these services and contact information for each was provided for each member. There are both single and group service opportunities available, Rotarians. Let’s see if we can do a little more! At the end of his presentation, Sam discussed with our current drivers how to improve the experience (only 3 clients at present), a most thoughtful and efficient administrative touch.
