Becka Oliver is the Executive Director of the Writer’s League of Texas. Becka told us the purpose of the WLT, which is the largest literary organization in Texas; they are there to support writers. WLT was founded in 1981 and now has more than 1300 members. It is a membership based – the members receive certain benefits and services for their dues, but WLT’s programs are available to all. WLT has student memberships as well. Programming includes on-line classes and workshops for writers of all experiences. They also have some free programming in rural libraries and a program in Austin public schools, which takes authors into the schools to do presentations. There is an annual conference in Austin as well. On youtube, WLT has videos for writers and promote writers there as well. There is a free and open monthly virtual event. The next one on 1/21/2021. WLT also does Project WISE presentations on its youtube channel for students. WLT raises funds through paid programming and membership dues; it is non-profit, so benefits from grant programs – including grant from City of Austin (20% of its budget) through part of revenue raised from 15% of hotel occupancy tax revenue. That has impacted funding because of the tax collections having dropped. WLT also takes donations; it just did a silent auction fundraiser that was very successful. WLT encourages its membership to write and read as well. We should all look for books that tell diverse experiences and stories.
