Our speaker on 8 December was Dr Roseline Toussaint, who told us about her journey from Haiti to the U.S. In 1985, she was visiting the U.S. by herself. Then chaos happened in Haiti related to the over-throw of Jean-Claude Duvalier, who was the son of Francois Duvalier, who had been president of the country from 1957 to his death in 1971. At that point, there was no way for her to get home, so she stayed with a cousin in Miami, even though her parents wanted to come home. She relied upon her Christian faith and prayed a lot at church to try and decide what to do. Through her church she met her husband and ended up moving to Washington State with him. She went to school there for podiatry. They eventually moved to Texas and live in Pflugerville, where she has her podiatry practice. Club members asked her about her life in Haiti before she came to the U.S. While the Duvaliers were in control, you could not say anything bad about them or you would disappear. A lot of people left the country that time. However, after the 1986, the country was left in chaos, and the situation has not improved much in the last 30 years. Haiti’s president was assassinated a few months ago, despite having a heavy guard presence around his house, and gangs control the country. They kidnap people for ransom and kill them if the ransom is not paid. They also demand money from business owners. Despite the situation, Dr. Toussaint’s five siblings remain in Haiti; only her mother has come to live with her in Texas. Thank you Tink for bringing us another interesting speaker!
