The Al Mousa family
Chad Peveateaux, head of the iACT refugee program spoke to us about the refugee family that we are raising funds for this year. He also talked briefly about iACT’s other programs: Hands on Housing, Financial Literacy, teaching English to refugees, mentoring for refugee teens, and health and wellness. There were also questions from the audience about Federal funding. Chad said that iACT was cutoff last January for three months making it very difficult for them. They were able to continue services because of support from the community, but the funding cutoff caused some groups like them to shut down. Refugee families were also cut off from the normal funding support that they needed.
Our family this year is the Al Mousa family, who are refugees from Syria. The family includes a single mom, Nadia, and six children, ages 16, 14, 12, 11, 9, and 3. They spent 13 years as refugees in Lebanon, where Nadia’s husband and the children’s father died in an accident in front of his family. That same day, they found out they had been accepted as refugees to the United States. Now that they are living in Austin, it is the first time all the children have been in school. Nadia works as a dishwasher to support family. Donations will help provide rent support and they also need furniture and used car.
