Councilwoman Ora Houston

At our 1 June meeting, Austin City Councilwoman Ora Houston spoke to us about issues concerning her in the City of Austin as a whole and her District 1 in particular. District 1 includes parts of north and east Austin. Her three main priorities are communication with her constituents, education and employment for those living within her district, including related transportation issues, and engagement of the citizens of Austin in city government. She encouraged anyone with an issue to attend the city council meetings or committee meetings and present the issue. Currently, special interest groups have more say than the average citizen, as they attend the council meetings on a regular basis to present their issues. With regards to the new district system, Councilwoman Houston says its still a new process and all of the council members are still learning to relate to each other.
