Jeannine Floores spoke to us about Breath of Life – Maternity Ministries, which was our charity of the month in July. She formed Breath of Life here in Austin in 2000 and they have a maternity home – Sarah’s House, that provides a space for pregnant women who need assistance. Jeannine knows how these women feel as she became pregnant when she was young and made the decision to give her child up for adoption so that the child would be brought up in a two-parent home. Jeannine and her husband also adopted one of their two sons. Breath of Life helps women who have decided to have their children and either raise them or give them up for adoption. They also keep a list of maternity homes throughout the State of Texas as a resource of women who live in other parts of the state. Breath of Life is funded by individuals and local churches. Currently, Sarah’s House can house four women at a time, but they are looking to grow with eye towards being able to house 14 women, including those with special needs – something that is not met anywhere in the U.S. While the women stay at Sarah’s House they are required to attend a church of their choice, they are taught parenting skills, and need to work or further their education. Breath of Life - Sarah’s House provides hope for women that might not otherwise find it. Of the women they have helped: 88% were homeless, 73% moved forward with their education, 17% received their GED or diploma, 70% received vocational training, 73% chose single parenting, and 27% chose adoption.
