Rotary International's most recent area of focus is the environment, and this year District 5870 has a Rotary Environmental Advisory Committee led by Joan Bohls from the E-Club.  On 2nd of August, our own Karen Bogisch presented some information and videos about what Rotary is doing to protect the environment and how we as Rotarians can do our part. She told us about several Rotary Foundation global grants that are geared towards projects that will help protect the environment.  Projects on family planning and girls' education will help reduce population growth and lessen stress on the environment.  Regenerative agriculture projects that avoid the use of plows, plant a diverse array of cover crops, and limit or abstain from use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers can boost the amount of organic matter in the soil improving its health and the health of the plants growing in it. Other types of projects supported by Rotary Foundation global grants include those reducing food waste, installing rooftop solar, and helping with reforestation of tropical forests.  Karen also provided us with a list of things we can do locally and as individuals, including limiting our use of plastics, considering a staycation instead of traveling, and recycling and composting.  Karen closed by showing us two videos, one was an interview with Past-RI President Jennifer Jones that discussed projects to help pollinators, and the other was a video showing a joint clean up project between British Rotarians and other groups in Great Britain.
