Jordan Ruch, Outreach Manager - Wonders & Worries: 21 years, 14,000 children and parents 1 mission! Wonders & Worries provides free professional support to kids and families with a parent or caregiver with life changing illness or injury, which can be a traumatic event for children. Jordan described common stressors and fears of children at different development stages depending upon their age and showed video of two girls explaining their feelings by making a feelings garden with paper flowers. She also described the risks for the children if they don’t get support – mood changes, academic changes, physical changes such as stomach aches, and social changes. Wonders & Worries has a team of Certified Child Life Specialists to help the children – they are trained to explain the medical diagnosis and surrounding changes. Jordan told us how Wonders & Worries was started by Meredith Cooper and Melissa Hicks and is the only organization in the nation that provide this type of service for children of adults who are sick. Their services are free of charge and fully funded by the community – no government funding. Their biggest referral source is Texas Oncology as well as other medical facilities and schools, and they support 31 counties in the San Antonio, Houston and Austin areas. The curriculum consists of six sessions, but assistance is on-going. There are individual sessions, check-in groups, peer group sessions, parenting support, anticipatory grief, and family fun events. Wonders & Worries supports the children until they graduate from high school. They now have a national helpline 10-4 Monday through Thursday that can provide immediate support. They have recently added two apps for parents and professionals and a parenting podcast and their website provides resources for parents and professionals. In conclusion, Jordan described volunteer opportunities with their fundraisers, including an urban scavenger hunt in April, a skeet shoot in the Fall, and a gala in February. What a wonderful organization!
